Sultana
[suhl-TAN-uh]
Originating in Smyrna, Turkey, this small, pale golden-green grape is the most widely planted variety in California. There it’s known as Thompson Seedless, after William Thompson, the first commercial Sultana grower in California. In the United States, during the white-wine boom of the 1970s, Sultana was widely used for winemaking. Today, however, varieties like FRENCH COLOMBARD and CHENIN BLANC have diminished Sultana’s role. In California, Sultana’s use for winemaking ranks third behind its demand first as a raisin and then as a table grape. Sultana is also widely grown in Australia and Chile. It produces a neutral-flavored wine used in JUG WINES and inexpensive SPARKLING WINES.
