supérieur
[soo-pehr-YUR]

A French term indicating a somewhat higher-quality wine than the standard. This ranking is generally expressed as a requirement for a slightly higher ALCOHOL content and slightly lower maximum vineyard YIELDS (the latter produces more intense flavors). For example, the BORDEAUX SUPÉRIEUR AC requires a minimum alcohol level of 101⁄2 percent, versus 10 percent for BORDEAUX AC, and BEAJOLAIS-SUPÉRIEUR AC wines must be 1 percent higher in alcohol than those of BEAJOLAIS AC. The maximum vineyard yield for Bordeaux Supérieur AC is set about 20 percent lower than that for the Bordeaux AC.
