Refosco
[ray-FOHS-koh]

Red-grape variety heavily planted in Italy’s FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA. Refosco (also known as Cagnina and Terrano) can produce high-quality, deeply colored wines with CONCENTRATED flavors reminiscent of tart plums and a slightly bitter FINISH. But it can also have high ACIDITY if grapes aren’t fully ripened. Italy has several Refosco CLONES, with the one known as Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso considered superior to the Refosco Nostrano. There are theories that Refosco and the French MONDEUSE are the same variety, but this hasn’t been proven, and some evidence suggests that it may not be true. In California, there is a variety called Refosco that is related to Mondeuse but not to samples of the Italian Refosco that were available for DNA testing.
