Rhone Rangers

Nonprofit, educational organization established in the United States to promote wines made from the RHÔNE VARIETY grapes. To qualify as a “Rhone Ranger” wine, it must be made of at least 75 percent of any single variety or a combination of approved varieties.  Although the accepted list includes the twenty-one varieties approved for the CÔTES DU RHÔNE AC, plus PETITE SIRAH (also known as Durif), only about half of these varieties are currently grown in the United States. In addition to Petite Sirah, approved grapes include CARIGNANE, CINSAULT, COUNOISE, GRENACHE, MARSANNE, MOURVEDRE (also called Mataro), ROUSSANNE, SYRAH, and VIOGNIER. The organization was started informally in the 1980s by some of the pioneers of Rhône-style wines and formalized in 1997. Today the Rhône Rangers includes over 130 member wineries.
