Robe Ranges

Newly recognized Australian wine-producing region located about 200 miles southeast of the city of Adelaide in the Limestone Coast Zone of SOUTH AUSTRALIA. It’s situated between the coastal towns of Robe and Beachport. Vines weren’t planted until 1994, so this area doesn’t have a long wine history. There’s excitement about Robe Ranges because its soil—terra rossa over limestone—is similar to the famous COONAWARRA region, which is approximately 60 miles inland and eastward. The primary difference is that Robe’s coastal location gives it a slightly longer growing season. The climate is very similar to the MOUNT BENSON region about 25 miles north. Varieties grown here are CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SHIRAZ, MERLOT, PINOT NOIR, CHARDONNAY, SÉMILLON, and SAUVIGNON BLANC. Southcorp is the big player in this new region.
