Robertson WO

A demarcated SOUTH AFRICA wine district that is part of the Breede River Valley Region and located about 110 miles east of Cape Town around the town of Robertson. This is a hot, dry area that requires irrigation. Water comes from the Breede River, but VITICULTURE wasn’t feasible until the Brandvlei Dam was constructed in the early 1900s. Today, this district has 12,000 acres of vineyards, about 12 percent of the nation’s total. White varieties still dominate the vineyards with Columbar (COLUMBARD), CHENIN BLANC (called Steen locally), CHARDONNAY, and SAUVIGNON BLANC the leaders. Recent plantings have been mostly red varieties—CABERNET SAUVIGNON, Shiraz (SYRAH), MERLOT, PINOTAGE, and RUBY CABERNET. The region was traditionally a producer of FORTIFIED WINES and BRANDY but is shifting rapidly to higher-quality TABLE WINES, as evidenced by the shift in grapes being planted (and those being uprooted).
