Rosso di Montalcino DOC
[RAWS-soh dee mawn-tahl-CHEEnoh]

DOC that was established after BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO was upgraded to DOCG status. Rosso di Montalcino encompasses the same area as Brunello di Montalcino (around the town of Montalcino in southern TUSCANY) and uses the same SANGIOVESE clone, Brunello. Rosso di Montalcino wines require only 1 year of AGING, compared to the 4 years necessary for Brunello di Montalcino. The reduced aging time allows this area’s producers to release a less-expensive version of the Brunello di Montalcino, which is lighter and less intense, but has a younger, fresher character to it. It also enables producers to make better Brunello di Montalcino wines because the best grapes can be selected for them, with the rest of the grapes going into the Rosso di Montalcino.
