Roussanne [roo-SAHN] A white-wine grape grown mainly in the northern portion of France’s RHÔNE region. Roussanne can produce delicate, refined wines and is best known for its use in the white wines of CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE, CROZES-HERMITAGE, HERMITAGE, and SAINTJOSEPH. It’s also one of the four white grapes allowed in the red wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Since the 1950s, Roussanne has been steadily replaced by the more productive MARSANNE, which produces full-bodied (see BODY), somewhat FAT wines. Small amounts of Roussanne are also grown in Italy’s TUSCANY region and are allowed in the white wines of the MONTECARLO DOC. There’s also a pink variation known as Roussanne du Var that’s used in many of the Rhône’s lesser wines. This grape is also called Bergeron and Rosana.
