Padthaway
[PAD-thuh-way]

An Australian wine-producing region located in the Limestone Coast Zone in the southeastern corner of SOUTH AUSTRALIA around the town of Padthaway near the New South Wales border. Early on, this region was called Keppoch, but after a struggle over the name it was changed to Padthaway. Although not far from COONAWARRA, which is known for red wines, Padthaway's reputation is for its white wines. CHARDONNAY is the superstar of this region; RIESLING and SÉMILLON are also grown in quantity. Although Padthaway P is most recognized for Chardonnay, it also produces quality wines from CABERNET SAUVIGNON and Shiraz (SYRAH). However, in the Australian fashion, such wines are most often blended with wines produced in other growing regions. There are about 8,000 acres of vineyard in the Padthaway region.
