Paso Robles AVA
[PAH-soh ROH-blays]

A large APPELLATION established in 1983 and located around the town of Paso Robles in the northern part of California’s SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY. Its northern boundary is the MONTEREY COUNTY line, and it extends south of the town of Santa Margarita. The eastern boundary is parallel to the Kern County line, and the western boundary used to be the San Lucia Mountains, west of Paso Robles. The western boundary was extended in late 1995 to include an area east of the mountain range in the northern portion above the YORK MOUNTAIN AVA. Most of the growing area is classified as Region III (see CLIMATE REGIONS OF CALIFORNIA), although portions in the east are hotter and fall into Region IV. Some MESOCLIMATES that receive more cooling ocean breezes fall into the cooler Region II category. As of 2002, there were over 18,000 acres of vineyards. CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, ZINFANDEL, SYRAH, CHARDONNAY, and SAUVIGNON BLANC are the top six grape varieties grown in the Paso Robles AVA. Other red varieties include PETITE SIRAH, PINOT NOIR, GAMAY, and CABERNET FRANC. Other whites grapes are CHENIN BLANC, MUSCAT, and SÉMILLON. The area’s best known for its red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel.
