Peel

A newly recognized Australian wine region located in the Greater Perth Zone of WESTERN AUSTRALIA. It’s situated around the town of Mandurah, which is about 50 miles south of Perth. The GEOGRAPHE region borders it to the south, with the Indian Ocean to the west. This area is part of what was once called the South West Coast. Vines were first planted in this region in the 1850s and there was sporadic dabbling with VITICULTURE over the years. The modern era didn’t really begin until the 1970s. The breezes off of the Indian Ocean moderate the climate in this area and the soil conditions of sand over limestone necessitate some irrigation in the summer. Primary varieties here are CHARDONNAY, CHENIN BLANC, SEMILLON, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, and Shiraz (SYRAH).
