Penedès DO
[pay-NAY-dahss]

A DO area located southwest of the city of Barcelona in northeast Spain’s CATALONIA region. The area is also the center of the SPARKLING WINE industry, which has its own DO, CAVA. Penedès has approximately 65,000 vinyeard acres, which are spread throughout three subzones—Bajo (or Lower) Penedès, Medio (or Middle) Penedès, and Penedès Superior (Upper). ). Each subzone has different growing conditions, making each one best for specific grape varieties. The Penedès DO makes STILL WINES, which are predominantly white because of the large amount of white varieties planted for the sparkling wine industry. The predominant grapes are PARELLADA, MACABEO, and XAREL-LO, though there is a growing interest in CHARDONNAY. The smaller amount of red and ROSÉ wine that’s produced here is made primarily from Garnacha Tinta (GRENACHE), Carinena (CARIGNAN), and TEMPRANILLO. The best red wines come from CABERNET SAUVIGNON, an approved variety. Compared to most of Spain’s wine industry, the Penedès DO is very modern. It was the first region in Spain to introduce international varieties like CABERNET FRANC, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, GEWÜRZTRAMINER, MERLOT, PINOT NOIR, RIESLING, and SAUVIGNON BLANC—all sanctioned by DO rules. Penedès is a leader in STILL WINE innovations, led by the wine estates of Torres, Jean León, and Masía Bach.
