Perth Hills

An Australian wine region located in the Greater Perth Zone of WESTERN AUSTRALIA. It’s situated just east of Perth running north and south in the Darling Range around the towns of Kalamunda and Mundaring. The SWAN DISTRICT region runs along much of the Perth Hills’ western border; the PEEL region lies just south. Vines were first planted in this region in the 1880s. There were intermittent VITICULTURE efforts over the years, but the modern winemaking era didn’t begin until the 1970s. The climate here is moderately hot but varies depending on the location—both altitude and the Indian Ocean breezes can moderate the temperature. CHARDONNAY can do well in this region, and is the most widely grown. Other white varieties include CHENIN BLANC, SÉMILLON, VERDEHO, and SAUVIGNON BLANC. Shiraz (SYRAH) is the leading red variety, followed by CABERNET SAUVIGNON, GRENACHE, PINOT NOIR, and MERLOT.
