Picolit
[PEEK-oh-lee]
Thought to have been cultivated since Roman times, Picolit is a rather scarce and unique white-wine grape found in Italy's FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA region. The only DOC in which it is designated is COLLI ORIENTALI DEL FRIULI. Picolit was once more widely planted than it is now and had gained a reputation as this region's most exalted DESSERT WINE. However, because of FLORAL ABORTION, Picolit is an extremely low-yielding vine, and plantings are very limited today. The historic reputation and the scarce supply has created exorbitant prices for these sweet, flowery wines.
