Domäne
[daw-MEH-nuh]

German for “domain” or “estate” (see also WEINGUT). The word domäne generally is used only for state-owned estates or for private estates owned by nobility or other officially recognized family. As is the German habit, “Domäne” is often combined with others names, such as in Staatliche Weinbaudomäne or Domänenweingut Schloss Schönborn. The word Domäne may be used on the label only if the wine is made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate’s property.
