plonk
[PLONGK]
Slang for ordinary low-quality wine, referring to any cheap wine, red or white. Over the years plonk has had various meanings, at one time referring specifically to cheap, strong, FORTIFIED WINE. The term was coined by Australians during World War I as they drank French VIN BLANC, continuing to massacre and abbreviate the words "vin blanc," which ended up as "plonk." The word plonk is commonly used in Australia and Great Britain and, to some extent, in the United States.
