Pomerol AC [paw-muh-RAWL] Located on the east side of France’s Dordogne River, this is the smallest of the fine-wine-producing districts of the BORDEAUX region. It’s also the only district not to have rated its CHÂTEAUX in some official classification. Because it’s not near the better-known districts of MÉDOC and GRAVES, Pomerol didn’t gain much of an international following until the 1960s. Now its wines, led by those from the famous Château Pétrus, bring some of the highest prices in all of Bordeaux. The Pomerol area’s 1,900 acres are planted predominantly with MERLOT, which does extremely well in the region’s clay soil. Merlot, blended with some CABERNET FRANC and small amounts of CABERNET SAUVIGNON, produces wines that are generally SOFTER and less TANNIC than those from the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Médoc, yet Pomerol wines are still RICH and LUSH. The general perception is that these wines don’t AGE as well as those from the Médoc, but there are great Pomerol wines from outstanding VINTAGES that have aged beautifully for 40 years and more. Château Pétrus, which is favorably compared to the PREMIERS CRUS (first growths) of the Médoc, is first among many superb châteaux including Certan De May, Clos l’Eglise, La Conseillante, L’Eglise-Clinet, L’Evangile, Lafeur, Lafeur-Pétrus, Latour à Pomerol, Le Pin, Trotanoy, and Vieux-Château-Certan.
