Pomino DOC
[paw-MEE-noh]

A small DOC area located east of Florence in Italy's TUSCANY region. The area encircles the town of Pomino and includes vineyards that are within the CHIANTI Rufina sub-zone as well. Pomino produces BIANCO, ROSSO, VIN SANTO Bianco, and Vin Santo Rosso. The BIANCO wines are made mainly from Pinot Bianco (PINOT BLANC), CHARDONNAY, and TREBBIANO but can also include up to 15 percent of other white grapes. SANGIOVESE is the dominant grape in the ROSSO wines, which can also include CANAIOLO, CABERNET FRANC, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, and others. Standard Rosso must be AGED for 1 year; the RISERVA, for 3 years. The vin santo wines can range from DRY to sweet and must be aged for 3 years in small oak barrels called caratelli. The wine estate of Marchesi de'Frescobaldi dominates the area's production.
