Pouilly-Fuissé AC
[poo-yee fwee-SAY]

Located in the MÂCONNAIS area of France’s BURGUNDY region, this well-known APPELLATION controls the white wines from five villages—Chaintré, Fuissé, Pouilly, Solutré, and Vergisson. The CHARDONNAY wines can be quite good when made by diligent producers. Unfortunately, much of the Pouilly-Fuissé wine is made by the large cooperative in Chaintré from grapes picked from vineyards that are allowed huge YIELDS. Although these wines have a large international audience, many wine reviewers think they’re mediocre and overpriced. Pouilly-Fuissé should not be confused with POUILLY-FUMÉ wines from the LOIRE region, which are made from SAUVIGNON BLANC grapes. As an historical note, the rock of Solutré, which towers over the scenic Pouilly-Fuissé area, is commemorated as the site where early man drove thousands of wild horses off the cliffs to their deaths.
