Ortega
[or-TAY-guh]

White-wine grape named after the Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. It is a cross of MÜLLER-THURGAU and Siegerrebe (which is a GEWÜRZTRAMINER–Madeleine Angevine hybrid). The low-ACID, high-sugar Ortega grape produces wines with delightful FLORAL characteristics and hints of peach in both aroma and flavor. Ortega VARIETAL WINES are popular in Germany where they've won numerous medals in wine competitions. Ortega is primarily used for BLENDING; however, it is usually combined with grapes that have lower sugar content and higher acid.
