Navarra DO
[nah-VAHR-RAH]

A DO located south of Pamplona in the southern part of the Navarra province in north-central Spain. This region’s winemaking history dates back to the Roman occupation and its wines were long well regarded. At the end of the nineteenth century, PHYLLOXERA took its toll, shrinking the vineyard acreage from an estimated 120,000+ acres to less than 2000 acres. Today there are about 35,000 acres. Garnacha (GRENACHE) is grown in over half the vineyards and is the dominant grape, although TEMPRANILLO is gaining in popularity. Historically Navarra is best known for its rosado (ROSÉ) wines, but red wine now makes up half of the production. CABERNET SAUVIGNON, GRACIANO, Mazuelo (CARIGNAN), and MERLOT are also allowed in Navarra’s red wines. The area produces a small amount of white wine from CHARDONNAY, Garnach Blanca (GRENACHE), MALVASIA, and Viura (MACABEO).
