Nierstein
[NEER-SHTINE]

The premier wine-producing village of Germany’s RHEINHESSE region. It’s located in an area of excellent vineyards known as the RHEINTERRASSE, south of the city of Mainz. Nierstein also lends its name to the BEREICH that covers this area and to the three GROSSLAGEN that cover its vineyards—Niersteiner Auflangen, Niersteiner Rehbach, and Niersteiner Spiegelberg. In addition, it’s used in the name of the Grosslage Niersteiner Gutes Domtal, which covers vineyards for other area villages. Nierstein has many fine vineyards including Bildstock, Hipping, Hölle, Kranzberg, Ölberg, Paterberg, and Pettenthal. The finest wines generally come from vineyard sites (EINZELLAGEN) like these and, because the Bereich Nierstein annually produces a tremendous amount of wine (12 million cases in some years), it’s important for consumers to check the label for the Einzellagen name (such as Niersteiner Olberg). Many estates also produce fine wines under the three Niersteiner Grosslagen.
