Nuits-Saint-Georges AC
[nwee san ZHAWRZH]

After BEAUNE, the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges is the second most important commercial center in France’s CÔTE D’OR section of BURGUNDY. The town contains a significant number of NÉGOCIANTS and has given its name to the northern half of the Côte d’Or—the CÔTE DE NUITS. The town is the center of the Nuits-Saint-Georges AC, which lies between the villages of VOSNE-ROMANÉE and Prémeaux-Prissey. Prémeaux-Prissey wines are allowed to use the Nuits-Saint-Georges AC and usually do. There are no GRAND CRU vineyards in this APPELLATION, but there are thirty-eight PREMIERS CRUS—more than in any other appellation. The best of these are Les Saint-Georges, Les Vaucrains, and Les Cailles, followed by Les Damodes, Aux Boudots, Aux Murgers, Les Pruliers, and Les Perrières. Red wines made from PINOT NOIR grapes dominate the production, although tiny amounts of white wine are also made. The wines from the best producers can be quite good with richly CONCENTRATED flavors and good TANNIC structure. They’re best when aged for five years or more. Current critiques indicate that the presence of many mediocre producers results in varying levels of quality, which makes the selection of Nuits-Saint-Georges AC wines difficult.
