Maconnais
[mah-kawn-NEH]

Located in the southern portion of France’s BURGUNDY region, this large grape-growing area takes its name from the town of Mâcon. It’s positioned between BEAUJOLAIS to the south and the CÔTE CHALONNAISE to the north. White wines, which are made from CHARDONNAY, make up two-thirds of the area’s production. Red and ROSÉ wines are made primarily from GAMAY, with some PINOT NOIR.  A fair amount of wine is produced under the basic Burgundian APPELLATIONS of BOURGOGNE, BOURGOGNE PASSE TOUT GRAINS, and the sparkling wine appellation CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE. Other appellations, in increasing order of quality, are MÂCON AC, MÂCON SUPÉRIEUR AC, and MÂCON-VILLAGES AC. At the top end of the quality spectrum are a number of individual villages with their own appella-tions—POUILLY FUISSÉ, POUILLY LOCHÉ, POUILLY VINZELLES, and SAINT VÉRAN. Also located in the Mâconnais are the villages of Chardonnay and CHASSELAS, which presumably gave their names to the grape varieties. See also ALTESSE.
