Margaret River An Australian wine region located about 200 miles south of the city of Perth in the South West Australia Zone of WESTERN AUSTRALIA. Although vineyards were first planted in the nineteenth century, this is considered a relatively new area because major vineyards weren’t reestablished until the late 1960s. The red wines, which attracted considerable attention, didn’t reach the market until the mid-1970s. This beautiful region is uniquely bounded on three sides by water—to the south is the Southern Ocean, to the west is the Indian Ocean, and to the north is Geographe Bay. This results in a maritime-influenced climate that, when combined with the area’s Mediterranean environment, produces a setting of only small temperature fluctuations. Margaret River has about 7,500 acres of vineyards. Grape varieties grown in this region include CABERNET SAUVIGNON, Shiraz (SYRAH), MERLOT, PINOT NOIR, CHARDONNAY, SÉMILLON, SAUVIGNON BLANC, CHENIN BLANC, and RIESLING.
