Master of Wine

A title earned by passing extensive tasting and written examinations given by the Institute of Masters of Wine, a British organization established in the 1950s. The examinations include BLIND TASTINGS of about three dozen wines and written tests on VITICULTURE, VINIFICATION, and various aspects of the wine trade. The Master of Wine title was available only to British citizens until 1988, when non-British citizens were allowed to apply. Taking and passing the test culminates intensive schooling and at least 5 years experience working in the wine trade. A Master of Wine may put the initials M. W. after his or her name.
