Maximin Grunhaus
[MAHK-sih-mihn GRYOON-howss]

A tiny village located on the Ruwer River in Germany’s MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER region. It’s actually classified as an ORSTEIL that’s part of the village of Mertesdorf. Maximin Grünhaus has approximately 80 acres that have been owned by the von Schubert family since 1882. The vineyards are broken into three EINZELLAGEN (individual vineyard sites)—Bruderberg at the bottom, Herrenberg in the upper section, and Abtsberg, the steep middle section that produces the best grapes. The wines from each Einzellagen are labeled separately, using the village’s name—for example, Maximin Grünhauser Bruderberg. The wines are highly regarded, and those from good VINTAGES are capable of AGING for around 20 years. May wine Originally a German specialty, this is a punch made from sweet, light wine infused with aromatic woodruff leaves. It’s served cold with fruit (usually strawberries) floating in it. Mazis-Chambertin AC [mah-ZEE shahm-behr-TAN] A 221⁄2-acre GRAND CRU vineyard that adjoins that of the better-known CHAMBERTINCLOS DE BÈZE. Mazis-Chambertin is located in the village of GEVREY CHAMBERTIN in the CÔTE DE NUITS district of France’s BURGUNDY region. The general quality of its red (PINOT NOIR) wines is extremely high, and they’re considered some of the best in the world. These wines are deep-colored, RICH, CONCENTRATED, and TANNIC, which makes them prime candidates for long aging (15 to 25 years for the best ones). See also CHAMBERTIN.
