McLaren Vale

An Australian wine region located in the Fleurieu Zone of SOUTH AUSTRALIA. It's situated on the coast a little over 20 miles south of Adelaide around the town of McLaren Vale. Vines were first planted in this region in 1838 at Reynella, but the wine industry was slow to develop until the late 1870s. Then there was expansion for several decades, and by the early 1900s McLaren Vale had established itself as one of Australia's important wine-producing regions—an identity it maintained throughout the twentieth century. Today there are over fifty wineries and about 13,000 acres of vineyards. McLaren Vale is known for its BIG, FULL-BODIED red wines—Shiraz (SYRAH), CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, and GRENACHE. This region's CHARDONNAY, SAUVIGNON BLANC, and SÉMILLON also enjoy excellent reputations.
