Mittelrhein
[MIHT-uhl-rine]

With less than 1,700 acres of vineyards planted, Mittelrhein is the fifth smallest of the thirteen German ANBAUGEBIETE (quality-wine regions). The region follows the path of the Rhine River from the bend in the river near the villages of Lorch and Bingen stretching northward about 60 miles to Konigswinter, just south of Bonn. RIESLING grapevines cover nearly 75 percent of the thin strand of vineyards running along both sides of the Rhine. The wines are of high quality, and most are consumed within the region. High-quality SEKT is made as well. The Mittelrhein region is noted for its spectacular, picturesque scenery as the Rhine twists and turns its way north. There are three BEREICHE—Siebengebirge, Rheinburgengau, and Bacharach—and eleven GROSSLAGEN in the region.
