Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
[MOH-zuhl sahr ROO-vayr]

The official all-encompassing name of the German ANBAUGEBIET (quality-wine region) that encompasses the vineyards surrounding the Mosel River and its two tributaries, the Saar and the Ruwer. The region stretches from the French border to the point where the Mosel joins with the Rhine. Internationally, this Anbaugebiete is the best known of the thirteen German regions. RIESLING grapes cover over 50 percent of the 31,000 vineyard acres, followed by MÜLLER-THURGAU and ELBLING. Many of the vineyards are on steep, difficult, slate-based terrain, which produces excellent, STEELY Riesling wines, the best of which are capable of AGING for many years. The region consists of 4 BEREICHE—ZELL/MOSEL, BERNKASTEL, SAAR-RUWER, and Obermosel—19 GROSSLAGEN, and 525 EINZELLAGEN. The Zell/Mosel is the northernmost part of this Anbaugebiet. Bernkastel, the most prolific of the Bereiche, covers the midsection of the Mosel River called the MITTELMOSEL. Saar-Ruwer covers the two tributaries, and Obermosel, which means “Upper Mosel,” is the farthest south. Well-known Grosslagen include Bernkasteler Badstube, Bernkasteler Kurfürstlay, Kröver Nacktarsch, Michelsberg, Piesporter, Wiltinger Scharzberg, and Zeller Schwarze Katz.
