Lake Erie AVA

Viticultural area that encompasses 2,236,800 acres in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio along the shore, and on the islands of Lake Erie. Although the AVA was established in 1983, the area’s history of grape growing and winemaking goes back at least 150 years. This area is broken up into subdistricts—western, central, and eastern. The western subdistrict runs from Toledo, Ohio, to Cleveland, Ohio, and includes the western islands, where the lake’s warmth (see LAKE EFFECT) provides as many as 206 frost-free days (more than any other area around Lake Erie) on the ISLE ST. GEORGE AVA. The central subdistrict, which runs from Cleveland, Ohio to Erie, Pennsylvania, is the coolest. The Grand River Valley AVA, a 125,000acre area in the northeastern Ohio counties of Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula along the Grand River, is part of the larger Lake Erie AVA. The eastern subdistrict runs from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Buffalo, New York, and has the next most frost-free days after the western area. There are over 30,000 acres of vineyards in this AVA, a majority of which are in New York’s Chautauqua and Erie Counties. A preponderance of these vineyards are planted with CONCORD, which is usually made into grape juice and grape jelly. A very small percentage is planted to HYBRIDS (like CAYUGA, CHAMBOURCIN, SEYVAL BLANC, and VIDAL BLANC) and VITIS VINIFERA vines (like RIESLING CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CABERNET FRANC, CHARDONNAY, GEWÜRZTRAMINER, Pinot Grigio (PINOT GRIS), and PINOT NOIR).
