Langhe DOC [LAHN-gyah] Approved in 1994, this important DOC zone covers a majority of the province of Cuneo around ALBA in north-western Italy’s PIEDMONT region. Much of its area overlaps other demarcated areas, such as BARBARESCO DOCG, BAROLO DOCG, and ROERO DOC. Langhe DOC winemaking rules are less restrictive than those for the Barolo and Barbaresco DOCG wines. Unlike these DOCGs, Langhe can blend other approved grapes with NEBBIOLO. Producers are also allowed to use non-native grapes like CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CHARDONNAY, and SAUVIGNON BLANC. These relaxed rules are allowing area winemakers to be inventive, and some wines produced in the Langhe DOC are gaining a reputation as the Piedmont’s equivalent to the SUPER TUSCANS of TUSCANY.
