Lirac AC
[lee-RAK]
Just north of Tavel in France's southern RHÔNE region is the village of Lirac, surrounded by the vineyards that comprise this APPELLATION. Lirac makes ROSÉ wines similar to those from Tavel. It also produces red wines that are comparable to slightly lighter versions from CHÂTEAUNEUF-DE-PAPE, which is just northeast. These wines, which are improving Lirac's reputation, are made primarily from GRENACHE, with some CINSAUT, MOURVÈDRE, and SYRAH. Tiny amounts of white wine are produced mostly from CLAIRETTE, but BOURBOULENC, Picpoul, and others are also used.
