Livermore Valley AVA

One of California’s oldest wine districts, which is located in Alameda County, approximately 50 miles southeast of San Francisco. This AVA, which is about 15 miles long and 10 miles wide, is warm because it is blocked from some of the cooling ocean breezes that some of its neighboring areas receive. For that reason, most of it is ranked a Region III (see CLIMATE REGIONS OF CALIFORNIA), although some parts are considered Region II. It is included in the huge CENTRAL COAST AVA and the larger SAN FRANCISCO BAY AVA. SAUVIGNON BLANC and SÉMILLON grapes have always done well here, although CHARDONNAY now accounts for about half the vineyard acreage. CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, PETITE SIRAH, RIESLING, SYRAH, and ZINFANDEL, along with numerous other varieties, are planted here as well. Despite the residential influx, vineyard acreage is increasing due to a land-use measure put in place. There are now approximately 4,000 acres planted in this area. The well-known Wente Bros. and Concannon wineries are the oldest in the area, both being established in the 1800s.
