Lodi AVA
[LOH-di]

VITICULTURAL AREA in the SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY between Sacramento and Stockton that extends east until it runs into the SIERRA FOOTHILLS AVA. Although this area is part of California’s huge, hot CENTRAL VALLEY, cooling breezes from San Francisco Bay and the San Joaquin River Delta can lower temperatures by as much as 10°F compared to areas farther south. Lodi is considered a Region III-Region IV area (see CLIMATE REGIONS OF CALIFORNIA), and ZINFANDEL and SAUVIGNON BLANC do well here. The area encompasses approximately 540,000 acres, 75,000 of which are planted. This planted acreage enables Lodi to produce between 17 and 18 percent of California’s wine grapes, more than SONOMA COUNTY and the NAPA VALLEY combined. This region now has significant plantings of CHARDONNAY, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, and MERLOT. Robert Mondavi’s huge Woodbridge Winery is located here, producing some 5 million to 6 million cases of wine each year. Turner Road Vinters (formerly part of Sebastiani and now part of Canandaigua Wine Company) produces about 7 million cases.
