King Valley

An Australian wine region located in the North East Victoria Zone of VICTORIA. It’s situated in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range about 165 miles northeast of Melbourne around the town of Wangaratta. The first commercial vineyards appeared in King Valley in 1882, and the region continued to grow for the next decade. In the 1890s, a depression hit, and PHYLLOXERA in neighboring regions caused a general decline in the local wine industry. Brown Brothers, which was founded in 1885, managed to survive, and today it’s the largest producer in the King Valley region. The 1980s saw a general resurgence in this region, which now has nineteen wineries and over 3,700 acres of vineyards. The southern portion sits at higher altitudes and is cooler; the north is lower and warmer. Base wine components for SPARKLING WINE blending come from the south’s CHARDONNAY and PINOT NOIR crops. The leading VARIETIES for STILL WINE are Chardonnay and CABERNET SAUVIGNON, followed by RIESLING, Shiraz (SYRAH), MERLOT, SAUVIGNON BLANC, and Pinot Noir.
