Jumilla DO
[khoo-MEE-lyah]

Located in the Levante region in eastern Spain, northeast of the city of Alicante, this DO has over 100,000 vineyard acres. Jumilla, which has long been associated with BIG, high-ALCOHOL (up to 18 percent) red wines, has been modernizing winemaking techniques in an attempt to produce lower-alcohol wines. In order to achieve a more elegant style of wine, some producers are picking earlier, before grapes get too high in sugar. They’re also using modern equipment like cooled, stainless steel tanks. The main grape in this area is Monastrell (MOURVÈDRE), which is planted in about 85 percent of the vineyard area. There are small amounts of Garnacha (GRENACHE) and Cencibel (TEMPRANILLO). The area’s white varieties are AIRÉN, MACABEO, Merseguera, and PEDRO XIMÉNEZ. Among those grapes recently planted are CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, and SYRAH.
