Ischia DOC
[EESS-kyah]

Located on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, this DOC is part of Italy’s CAMPANIA region. The island produces a BIANCO made primarily from Forastera, along with some Biancolella and other white grapes. The bianco superiore allows more Biancolella and requires a higher ALCOHOL level. The ROSSO uses mainly Guarnaccia and Piedirosso along with BARBERA and other red VARIETIES. Ischia wines are generally pretty mediocre but popular with the tourists visiting the island. Varietal wines, which require a minimum of 85 percent of the named variety, include Forastera, Biancolella, and Piedirosso (known locally as Per e Palummo).
