Hautes-Côtes de Nuits [oht koht duh NWEE] Located in the rugged hills directly behind the famous CÔTE DE NUITS area in France's BURGUNDY region, this APPELLATION encompasses the vineyard areas of nineteen different villages. As with the HAUTES-CÔTES DE BEAUNE AC, higher altitude is a problem for both the PINOT NOIR and CHARDONNAY grapes that are grown there. The grapes have a difficult time ripening, which means that both the red and white wines are never quite as FRUITY or full-bodied (see BODY) as those from the Côte de Nuits area.
