Haut-Médoc
[oh may-DAHK]

The southern portion of the MÉDOC district located in France’s BORDEAUX region. The Haut-Médoc extends north from the GRAVES area just north of the city of Bordeaux, to just above the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cardourne north of Saint-Estèphe. The Haut-Médoc is where the best and most famous Médoc châteaux are located. The Haut-Médoc AC covers all the Haut-Médoc except for the six individual village appellations of LISTRAC, MARGAUX, MOULIS, PAUILLAC, SAINT ESTÈPHE, and SAINT-JULIEN. The Haut-Médoc AC includes five CRU CLASSÉ châteaux not associated with specific village appellations: Belgrave, De Camensac, Cantemerle, La Lagune, and La-Tour Carnet. In general, wines labeled with the “Haut-Médoc AC” are much better than those simply labeled “Médoc AC,” but they are not as good as wines from one of the individual COMMUNE appellations like PAUILLAC AC or MARGAUX AC. The main grapes used throughout the Haut-Médoc are CABERNET FRANC, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, and MERLOT, with occasional use of PETIT VERDOT and minute amounts of MALBEC.
