A capacity unit equal to 100 liters, or 26.418 U.S. gallons, or 22 Imperial gallons. In European and South American countries, where metric systems are standard, wine production figures are generally expressed in hectoliters. YIELDS in such countries are expressed in terms of hectoliters per HECTARE. In comparing European yields to those of the United States, a hectoliter is approximately equivalent to 0.183 U.S. tons; 40 hectoliter per hectare would be equivalent to 2.96 tons per acre. Two tons per acre would be the equivalent of 27 hectoliters per hectare. Hecto is a shortened form of the word; hl is the abbreviated form.
