Hermann AVA

A VITICULTURAL AREA located in central Missouri west and southwest of the charming, Germanic town of Hermann, which lies between St. Louis and Jefferson City. This AVA encompasses 51,200 acres south of the Missouri River and west of the Gasconade River in Franklin and Gasconade Counties. Established in 1987, it was the second of Missouri’s approved AVAs. German immigrants settled this Missouri River Valley area starting in the 1830s, and set about almost immediately developing hillside vineyards, many of which are in use today. The vineyards are heavily planted with HYBRIDS like CAYUGA, CHAMBOURCIN, CHARDONEL, SEYVAL BLANC, VIDAL BLANC, Vignoles (RAVAT), and the popular Norton (CYNTHIANA), which makes up 20 to 25 percent of the vineyards. VITIS VINIFERA vines are extremely difficult to grow in the area. Stone Hill Winery, established in 1847 and Missouri’s largest winery, is located in the Hermann AVA.
