hotte
[AWT]

A French term for a long basket that's carried on one's back and used to transport grapes during the harvest. The general practice when harvesting grapes manually is to put the freshly cut grapes into hand-held baskets. The grapes are then dumped into the larger hotte, which is then carried to and unloaded into a truck or trailer that will transport the grapes to the winery. A hotte carrier generally works with a group of pickers, taking their grapes from the vineyard to the trailer.
