An Australian wine region located in the South West Australia Zone of WESTERN AUSTRALIA. It's situated around the town of Bunbury, which is about 90 miles south of Perth. The famous MARGARET RIVER region and the Indian Ocean sit on its western border, the BLACKWOOD VALLEY region is to the southeast, and the PEEL region is to the north. There was some viticultural activity in the region in the 1920s and 1930s, but the modern era did not really begin until the 1970s. The climate in the coastal portion of this region is moderated by the ocean breezes and is similar to that of the northern portion of Margaret River. Inland areas are generally hotter during the day and cooler at night. CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CHARDONNAY, MERLOT, RIESLING, SAUVIGNON BLANC, SÉMILLON, and Shiraz (SYRAH) are grown in various areas around the region (Shiraz being the most widely planted).
