An Australian wine region located in the Barossa Zone of SOUTH AUSTRALIA. It’s situated about 40 miles northeast of Adelaide around the towns of Angaston and Eden Valley. It shares much of its history with the BAROSSA VALLEY, which borders it on the west. Vines were first planted in 1847—the same year vines first arrived in the Barossa Valley. Eden Valley has not developed like the Barossa and today has only sixteen wineries. It’s cooler and windier so site selection is very important. RIESLING is Eden Valley’s most famous and widely planted grape. Shiraz (SYRAH) is the next most heavily planted, followed by CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PINOT NOIR, SÉMILLON, SAUVIGNON BLANC, and MERLOT. Shiraz has the same sterling reputation as Riesling here. Especially esteemed are those wines from Henshke, whose Hill of Grace Shiraz comes from vines planted in the 1860s and is thought by many to be second only to the great GRANGE from Penfold.
