Eitelsbach
[I-tls-bahkh]

A small village that’s part of the city of TRIER in Germany’s MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER region. Eitelsbach, which sits on the Ruwer River and is part of the BEREICH SAAR-RUWER, is well known because of one famous wine estate—Karthäuserhofberg. This estate’s vineyards, which are situated on the steep hills just above Eitelsbach, are considered one of the two best along the Ruwer (the other being MAXIMIN GRÜNHAUS). Karthäuserhofberg, which means “Carthusians’ Hill,” gets its name from the Carthusian monastery that owned the vineyard for nearly 500 years. Although the estate has five named vineyards—Burgberg, Kronenberg, Orthsberg, Sang, and Stirn—the vineyard names have not been used on labels since 1985, and all wines are labeled “Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberger.”
