Grave del Friuli DOC
[GRAH-veh del free-OO-lee]

The largest DOC zone in the FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA region in northeastern Italy. It produces over 40 percent of this region’s DOC wines. The word Grave in the name indicates the presence of gravelly terrain throughout the area. The DOC covers fourteen VARIETAL WINES and a ROSATO. The red varietal wines are Cabernet (made from CABERNET FRANC and CABERNET FRANC), Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, MERLOT, Pinot Nero (PINOT NOIR), and Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso (REFOSCO). The white varietals are CHARDONNAY, Pinot Bianco (PINOT BLANC), Pinot Grigio (PINOT GRIS), Riesling Italico (WELSCHRIESLING), Sauvignon (SAUVIGNON BLANC), TOCAI FRIULANO, Traminer Aromatico (GEWÜRZTRAMINER), and VERDUZZO FRIULANO. Varietal wines may contain up to 15 percent of other approved grapes of the same color. The Rosato must be 70 to 80 percent Merlot and 20 to 30 percent other approved red varieties.
