Grignolino
[gree-nyoh-LEE-noh]

A red-wine grape grown in the southeastern portion of Italy's PIEDMONT region, primarily in the provinces of ASTI and Alessandria. This variety produces unusual wines for this region, which is known for its BIG, bold, long-lived reds. Conversely, Grignolino wines have high ACIDITY and are rust-colored, delicately scented and flavored, and light-bodied (see BODY); they are best drunk young. These wines have DOC status in Asti and Monferrato Casalese. Grignolino's sporadic YIELDS have caused it to lose popularity with some growers in recent years. Small amounts of this variety are grown in California, where it's turned into light-bodied red or ROSÉ wines, the best known of which are from Heitz Wine Cellars.
