Erbaluce [ehr-bah-LOO-chay] A white-wine grape grown mainly in the northwest area of Italy’s PIEDMONT region. Erbaluce yields highly ACIDIC wines of rather ordinary quality. LEAN, DRY wines and SPARKLING WINES are produced under the DOC banner of ERBALUCE DI CALUSO. In the DOC of CALUSO PASSITO, the Erbaluce grapes are laid out in the sun to dry and then FERMENTED into a rich DESSERT WINE that ranges in color from pale yellow to golden. A LIQUOROSO—or FORTIFIED version—of the Caluso Passito is also produced. Erbaluce is most renowned for these PASSITO wines. Related Links: Caluso Passito DOC, Erbaluce di Caluso DOC, FREISA
