Estremadura
[ish-trer-mah-DOO-rah]

A VINHO REGIONAL located in western Portugal near Lisbon. Included in its boundaries are eight DOC areas—ALENQUER, Arruda, Bucelas, CARCAVELOS, COLARES, LOURINHÃ, Obidos, and Torres Vedras. It also has two IPRs—Alcobaça and Encostas d’Aire. The Estremadura region is Portugal’s largest volume producer and is generally thought of as a source of cheap, mediocre, easy-drinking wine. Quality is starting to improve in the region, especially for the wines coming out of the DOC designated areas.
